Puerto Río Tranquilo · 3 h · walk from the hotels3 h · ★ 4.98 (81)Puerto Río Tranquilo is the small village on Lake General Carrera where every Marble Caves tour begins. Stay at least one night so you can take a calm morning tour. Rooms are limited: in peak season book early, and bring cash, as the village has no reliable ATM.
Where to stay ↓All 11 Marble Caves tours meet in the village, within a few hundred metres of each other.
Hotel Bacaris rates 9.0 from 33 guest reviews on Trip.com, 280 m from a kayak operator.
On a January Saturday we found only one village property still bookable on Trip.com.
One Copec station; no reliable ATM.
The Exploradores Glacier can be combined with a Marble Caves kayak in one 9-hour tour.
Stay in the village itself if you can: everything is walkable and you can take the 07:00 kayak. Supply is small, so if the village is full, lodges elsewhere on the lake and towns about 70 km away, Cochrane and Puerto Río Ibáñez, are the fallback, with an early drive before your tour. Prices change daily, so check live rates.

Sleep in Puerto Río Tranquilo, not Coyhaique, if you can. Coyhaique is about 220 km and 4–5 hours away by road, so a day trip means 8–10 hours of driving for a tour of 1.5–3 hours. From the village you walk to the meeting point and can take the 07:00 departure, before the wind usually builds after midday.
Coyhaique has far more rooms, shops and a reliable choice of cash machines, so it works as the night before the drive south. The usual plan is Coyhaique or Villa Cerro Castillo on the way down, then one or two nights in the village with the tour on the first calm morning.

Plan two nights if your dates allow: one for the tour and one as a weather back-up. Wind is common on Lake General Carrera and operators move or cancel trips when it is strong, so a spare morning saves the main reason for the long drive. With only one night, book the earliest start the next day.
Two nights also fit the Exploradores Glacier: the Marble Caves on the first morning, the glacier valley the day after. In January and February book the room before the tour, because the village has far fewer beds than tour seats.
Trips are moved or cancelled in strong wind; it usually builds after midday.
Bring cash: the only ATM, inside a small market by the Copec station, is often reported out of service, and some operators do not take cards. The Copec station sells fuel, so fill up before the next long stretch. Buses stop on the main road near the tour offices, and restaurants are a few minutes' walk from the hotels.
Bring pesos from Coyhaique or Cochrane; some operators take cash only.
Fill up here before the next long stretch of the Carretera Austral.
Minibuses stop near the tour offices; schedules change by season.
Some hotels serve breakfast from 08:00; for a 07:00 tour, ask for a packed one.

The village is also the base for the Exploradores Glacier, in the Exploradores sector of Laguna San Rafael National Park, a full-day trip up the valley. One GetYourGuide tour combines it with a Marble Caves kayak in a single 9-hour day; otherwise plan an extra day after the caves if you want the glacier too.
The combined tour paddles the Marble Caves first, then drives about 1.5 hours each way up the Exploradores valley for three short viewpoint trails in the park, with a packed lunch. It needs at least two people.
